3/31/2023 0 Comments Boostnote as a jouranlI haven’t yet put it to test in an extensive way, but it’s certainly on my list. It’s open source and integrates with the browser. But it can do much more (“collect, organize, cite and share research”), and its application field is not limited to university work. It’s meant for academics, and was based originally around the need to cite books and scientific articles in a normalised way for bibliographies. I have 8 000 notes in one tab (it has taBs and taGs), and just typing search keywords is getting s-s-slow.Īnother program that is worth exploring is Zotero. Filing is easy, but search is a bit more clunky, although enhancements are in the works. It saves rich text but not images currently (although this is on the roadmap). The workflow is smooth and automated to create a note out of a Web page, and add metada to it : tags, remarks, title, link…Īctually, Cinta Notes can create a note from bits of text coming out of any application (such as a pdf reader), but it especially shines at Web clipping, with clever keyboard shortcuts. I use Cinta Notes, which is terrific if you want to file articles found on the Web. High DPI non-awareness is a disease and a curse, and software developers practicing this vice should be pilloried for the devious little cockroaches they really are. Then high DPI misbehaving is not limited to the size of icons, as I have already stated. Then just them staring me in the face with their horrible little deformed shapes is ugly and revolting, and I won’t stand it. Then I can’t go on disassembling any program out there in the futile attempt to make all icons go away - not all of them can be dismissed. I use some of them myself, but in no way can they replace an honest-to-God, Steve Jobs-induced user interface. First of all, keyboard shortcuts stink, and any software developer forcing you to use them should be slowly disembowelled before salt is poured on his wounds. Of course they are extremely useful and a huge step forward in man-machine interaction.Īnd no, you can’t replace them with keyboard shortcuts. Of course you can’t use a program nowadays without icons. I worry about icons because the software designer put them there, so I suppose they must have a purpose. They update often and seem to listen to users, it’s on github too, and so I’d say a really good one to try KlaasĬome on, now… Asking me why I worry about icons is like asking a driver why he worries about the driving wheel. The inline code sections and the snippets are good if that’s your thing. But I did read they’re looking at adding helpers. The only thing some won’t like is it’s a pure markup editor so it’s down to you to learn it (or as much as you need), there’s no formatting toolbar. However it does start up white for a fraction then switch to dark, would be nicer if that didn’t happen. It also has theming so if you like your dark themes they’re there. You can have multiple notebooks and in different locations if you want. You can sync it using whatever you want, dropbox, pcloud… I’ve not had a problem with locking as they use text files (well a boostnote json file plus cson files for the notes). Whilst onenote is fine I try and avoid as much MS stuff as I can due to all their spying. I’ve been using it for quite a while and I find the best alternative to onenote. Now You: Do you use a note taking application? Still, Boostnote ticks the right boxes for the most part: it is open source and cross-platform after all. Not everyone needs sync functionality but users who would like to access notes on the desktop and mobile devices can't use Boostnote for that right now without syncing exported notes to the mobile devices somehow. The program lacks some options at this point in time that would make it a full OneNote contender: the lack of mobile applications and syncing needs to be mentioned in this regard. The application worked well during tests it is up to the user to use advanced features such as support for HTML syntax or code snippets, or simply write text-only notes.īoostnote supports tags, different categories, snippet groups, searching, and filter options to display important or recently updated notes first. Closing Wordsīoostnote is a well designed note taking application with a focus on programming related notes. You find an option to link a WordPress blog to the note taking application in the preferences as well. 3/31/2023 0 Comments Design tinyurlRaft and Paxos, for example, only works if the number of failed nodes is less than half the total number of nodes in the system. However if you ever need to work with those directly, an important thing to pay attention to is that they are not perfect. Afterall, they are quite complicated and sometimes difficult to understand. I won't get into details on how these algorithms work. Zookeeper itself uses a consensus protocol called Zab (which stands for Zookeeper atomic broadcast). There are several algorithms that can be used to get consensus, like Paxos or Raft. And in this model, consensus is possible. This is known as the FLP Impossibility.įortunately, in most of the systems in practice, we can workaround this issue by modelling them as "partially synchronous systems", that is, we can apply a boundary on how long it takes to send messages between servers. In fact, it has been mathematically proven that, in an asynchronous system (meaning a system where we don't know how long it takes for messages to travel between servers), there is NO way to guarantee distributed consensus. This is know as the distributed consensus problem, which actually is one of the hardest problems in Distributed systems. So let's try to simplify & generalize the problem: given a set of servers, how do we ensure that all servers agree on a value, even if the servers might fail randomly (the value in this case would be the range assignment). The only way to do that is to make all servers agree on which ranges have been given, and which have not. In this case, when one servers in the Zookeeper cluster fails, somehow the system needs to make sure that the others don't return a duplicate range. That is why when we design systems, we design for failure. Unfortunately, in practice machines do fail, and in fact, they fail all the time. I probably wouldn't need multiple servers either, one beefy machine might be enough to do the job. If I had the guarantee that my servers never fails, then I wouldn't need Zookeeper. it is resilient to failures).Īnd that's the gist of the problem. But how does Zookeeper do that?įirst of all, why is it so hard to generate a unique sequence? Afterall, I can use a single computer to keep increasing a counter, and that would be unique, right? In fact, that solution is mentioned by Tushar in the video, but later rejected, because the counter-generating server might fail (either the machine itself crashes, or the network might go down etc.), and Zookeeper, somehow, magically provides "high availability" (i.e. Instead of answering the question "how to generate a unique sequence?" (or sequence range, in this case), this solution simply says "I'll just ask Zookeeper to give me one". The reason I think this answer is unsatisfying is because, while it works, it simply shifts the responsibility of generating the "unique" part of the sequence, which, is the hardest part of the problem, to Zookeeper. If the each server has a unique range, then they are guaranteed to generate unique sequences. Each server would be in assigned only one particular range to work with, and Apache Zookeeper is used to coordinate the sequence range assignments. To summarize, the most sophisticated solution proposed in the video is to partition all possible short sequences into ranges, and use a set of servers to return a monotonically increasing sequence, which falls within a range. That being said, they are sort of unsatisfying. Tushar's proposed solutions are quite good and I think most interviewers would be satisfied with them (please watch the video before continuing to read this post). The main problem is the createShort() API: How do you generate a short sequence of characters that is unique among URLs (note that uniqueness is an important property, we don't want different URLs to have the same shortcut). The second one is easy, you simply need to do a lookup and return the long URL (or 404 if none exists). This video discusses a common developer interview question, namely, how do you design a service like TinyURL, which allows users to turn long URLs into short ones that are just several characters long ( ).īasically, a TinyURL-like service would have 2 main APIs: createShort(longUrl) and getLong(shortUrl). Recently I came across a Youtube video called: System Design : Design a service like TinyUrl, from the channel Tushar Roy - Coding Made Simple. How would you design a service like TinyURL or Bitly ? 3/30/2023 0 Comments Fifa 18 gameplay modInstallation method alternative for expert (manual import, good for already patched data0.big, data7.big): Respect 2.1 files attrib not changed, but i have deleted from my patch 2.2:įifafs.exe -ar data0.big genplayers.ini genplayers.iniįifafs.exe -ar data0.big accomplishments.ini accomplishments.iniįifafs.exe -ar data0.big missingcharmap.ini missingcharmap.iniīackup current files: data0.big, data0.bh, data7.big, data7.bhĢ) Copy your original data0.big, data0.bh, data7.big, data7.bh and paste on my FIFA 11 HYBRID V 2.2 Easy Manual Install (this folder)Ĥ) Now copy the data0.big, data0.bh, data7.big, data7.bh into the FIFA 11\Game directory and overwrite old files.įor easy install your favorited LOD settings: first add your a file on this folder, now run the INSTALL HYBRID.bat!Įxpert manual install You can download it directly or get it on Steam. So it’s excellent for people like me who have literally not touched a video game controller in a decade-plus, as there’s no dexterity-based component. There’s no real skill involved-unlike playing MLB The Show, where you have to time up individual pitches and swings, or runs and throws if you’re really advanced, the most micromanaging you can do in OOTP is deciding whether or not to pitch to contact or pitch around a particular player. You can get really granular with it if you want, and manage each pitch of each game, or you can just set the simulation to run over the whole game, or a week, a month, or even the whole season. OOTP is a baseball simulation game, meaning you basically just set everything up-your rosters, your managers, your scouting preferences-and let the computer do the rest. I promise you it’s money well-invested as there are enough options to keep you entertained for well through however long all this goes on. You can also get a 10% discount by entering the code LOOKOUTLANDING. All you need is some free space on your computer and to purchase the game itself, which you can do here (and if you do from that link, we will get a little commission which helps support the content we bring you on the site). Here is the exciting news for my fellow Luddites: you don’t have to buy an expensive system or anything to play OOTP. But I am speaking right now to those of you who thought video games weren’t for you, for whatever reason. Experts, keep an eye out for articles from the rest of the staff that will introduce more advanced tips and tricks. In this article I, with guidance from staff writer and OOTP expert Grant Bronsdon, will walk you through the very basic setup for getting started with OOTP, and then we’ll continue on from there. If you are, like me, brand-new to the whole endeavor, welcome I look forward to learning alongside you. If you’re already an old hand at the world of virtual baseball, congratulations we’ll be publishing some guides for you, too, detailing the latest innovations in the newest versions of The Show and OOTP. So it’s time to learn how to play these baseball games. My houseplants are drowning, literally, in over-attention (the whole reason I loved caring for houseplants: they do not require much out of you other than a good lighting situation and the occasional drink, which is very much what I also require). There is no one to cook for or play board games with. Libraries are closed, and I am out of books. Video games have previously been in that latter category, and as such, I’ve never really played them in my adult life. Then there are things I’m very bad at, generally involving anything needing a lot of hand-eye coordination. There are many things I, Kate, am good at-reading and writing, cooking, pub trivia, singing a credible version of “The Story” by Brandi Carlile at karaoke, taking care of houseplants. 3/30/2023 0 Comments Google news weather pop up androidThis is one app that I'll be sure to check in with on a regular basis. But with Google News & Weather, the search giant has fashioned a nicely-designed program that's easy to use and simple to customize. Yahoo, Microsoft and plenty of other companies provide their own news apps for iOS and other mobile platforms. You can even hide the images that appear as part of the headlines if you're on a slow connection and simply want to see the text. You can also change or add locations for the weather if you want to see the forecasts for areas beyond your own town, and switch the screen between a light and dark background. Each region-specific section appears in its own native language, though, so you'll have to understand the language in order to read the stories. If you want to learn what's happening in Australia, Italy, the UK, China, Japan or a number of other regions, you can change your default to that area. Google has designed the app, which was previously only available for its Android operating system, with 60 different country-specific editions in mind. There's even more you can do to customize Google News & Weather. You can also change the order of your sections in the Manage Sections screen by simply dragging and dropping any single one to a different location. In that case, you can easily remove that section or any other section from the list of headlines. Reddit's tidy AMA app debuts for Android usersĪfter you return home from your Paris trip, you may no longer be interested in the weather or news over there.Try these great messaging apps for Windows Phone.5 tips for Google Voice in Hangouts on Android.Type "Paris" in the text field, and the app will display the weather forecast and latest stories related to Paris. For example, let's say you're taking a trip to Paris in a few days and want to check things out ahead of time. You can also add a location if you want to pick up news and weather for specific areas. The app will show you the latest stories on the new iPhone and create a new topic that you can view at any time. For example, if you want to stay current on news about Apple's new iPhone 6, you can type "iPhone 6" in the text field. Tapping a plus button allows you to add a specific topic to the coverage. But if the existing lineup of stories aren't enough reading to keep you busy, you can easily add more sources. Google says the app already provides news coverage from 65,000 different publications. Then simply tap the topic that interests you to move directly to its headlines. You can also tap the Headlines link at the top of the screen to quickly see a list of all covered topics. Simply tap a left arrow to return to the headline page, where you can swipe down so that the latest news headlines appear at the top of the page. Tapping a news headline opens a separate screen where you can read the full story from its original source. Tapping the Weather panel at the top of the screen gives you more details on the projected temperatures and forecast for today and the next few days. From there, you can scroll down the screen to see a selection of headlines across different topics, such as World News, Business, Technology, Entertainment, Sports and Health. Released on Tuesday for Apple's iOS operating system, the app dubbed simply Google News & Weather displays the current weather and latest general news headlines on its home screen. Google has ported over its news and weather app from Android to the iOS world. The app offers headlines from topics such as World News, Business, Sports and Health. 3/30/2023 0 Comments Dungeon crawl stone soup ghostsHowever you'll probably want to download the client first because the tutorials and hints mode are very helpful. I recommend playing online (in-browser) since there are some cool stat-tracking IRC bots and it helps with sharing your runs, getting spectator help and just generally being a part of the community. If you want to get into roguelikes but are having difficulty, I wholeheartedly recommend DCSS. There's lots of variety with the race/class/god system and there's extra challenges to do if simple 3-rune runs get too easy for you. I don't know if those same jerkwads are still around, but I'm sure the game will endure.Įdit - Just booted this version up, still no dwarves, I'm also sad to see the silly lava orcs are gone. Still, the core game is great, and I still boot it up at least once a year to see what's new. The whole "stone soup" thing is because it's supposed to an entirely community driven development, and those guys pissed all over that idea. They point to various factors (mostly "to make things more interesting and unique") for things getting removed, but reading their interactions with the community make it pretty clear what's really going on. Each level from Dungeon:3 onwards has a fixed chance of placing a ghost vault in most connected branches. All contain loot, and many place other monsters with extra loot. Dozens of new ghost vaults with a variety of themes. So they removed the mountain dwarf, arguably the most popular race (at least for new players) in the entire game, and nobody was happy, and they refused to back down. The ghost is always visible from outside the vault through clear walls. The one guy threw a fit because people didn't like his dwarves as much as the classic Tolkien dwarves, and wants to get rid of all the "traditional" fantasy stuff and implement their super original off-brand shit. I lost most of my interest in the game not just because of that, but because the devs handling of it. 3/30/2023 0 Comments Audio tuner for blue snowballSo the first thing I did was record a of seconds of silence with both mics. The Snowball is $69.99 and I picked up the C01U at Best Buy for $70. The result? Holy cow! I couldn't believe how quiet the Snowball was, especially compared to the Samson C01U USB mic, which is a comparable product, even costing the same. The first thing I wanted to check for was the low-level hiss I have noticed in all the USB mic I've used to date. Obviously in a review of a microphone, sound is top priority. First I wanted to see if it showed up as an available mic, so I went to Preferences (Ctrl-P), changed the A udio system to "DirectSound" (it had been set to ASIO for my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Interface), and voila! Under Input Device was "Microphone (Blue Snowball)." Excellent and so very easy. Next I opened Reaper, my standard recording software program, to actually test out how it sounded. Windows automatically installed the driver when I plugged int the cable, in about 15 seconds, and it showed up as an audio device called Blue Snowball in Devices and Printers. I tried it on a Windows 7 (32-bit) machine, attaching and plugging in the included USB cable. To my delight it reacted exactly as I had hoped, swiveling on a ball-and-socket joint built into the mic. I was wondering how to adjust the angle and tried shifting it around. This setting is useful for small singing groups (can gather around the mic), conferences, interviews, and environmental recordings (using a laptop I guess).Ī word of warning about the omni setting though - if your recording space is not ideal, the omni pattern will pick up a lot more noise and room echo/reverb than the cardioid pattern. It picks up sound equally from all directions - behind, below, above, etc. Omni-directional is just what it sounds like. Most mics default to that pickup pattern. And this is the main difference between the standard Snowball and the Snowball iCE).Ĭardioid means it picks up sound best that is in front of the mic, rejecting what's behind and to the sides of it. So Blue Snowball mic has two pickup patterns, cardioid and omni-directional. Third Position - activates the omni capsule.Second Position - activates the cardioid capsule with a -10dB PAD.First Position - activates cardioid capsule. The manual reveals these 3 positions to be: There is a switch on the back of the mic with 3 positions. Motherboard sound cards also have converters, but they are of low quality and not recommended for recording. Standard mics must be plugged into a separate interface with converters inside. USB mics have converters built right into them, which is what makes them so handy. In digital audio sound must be converted to ones and zeros (digital). It doesn't work like a standard mic (XLE/3-pin connector), which requires an audio interface to connect to a computer. That means it plugs directly into a USB port on a computer. I can say that I've never used a spherical microphone before, so I looked even more forward to testing it out than usual.Īnd just to mention it again, because it's important - The Snowball is a USB microphone. the Snowball is a large diaphragm USB condenser microphone that is, at the very least, unique in shape and appearance. This is a review of the The Snowball microphone, by Blue. 3/29/2023 0 Comments Aurora hdr pro windows equivalentTo sign up for pre-order announcements and more, please visit /2018.
